Chaktomuk Conference Hall

Chaktomuk Conference Hall, 1961, Phnom Penh

Design: 1957ー1959
Cmpetion: 1961
Architect: Vann Molyvann
Structural engineer: Kei Fan Chan
Main contractor:  Chrun You Hak

The building has a symmetrical, fan-shaped plan. Concentric stage, audience, and balcony areas radiate outward from the peak of the fan shape, a foyer that overlooks the river like the prow of a ship. The golden roof, clad in aluminum, recalls the gabled roof of a wooden temple, and a decorative tower "modeled on the roof of a royal palace" stands at the peak of the fan shape.

View from the street of the curved façade.

View from the riverside. Louvers between the ceiling and rood allow wind from the river to pass through.

View from the Bassac River. Ornamental tower on the roof was designed to be in harmony with surrounding palace buildings.

Balcony on first floor facing the street.

The decorative tower.
