The Phnom Penh Central Market, built in 1937 under the French, is one of the city's landmarks and an outstanding example of Southeast Asian Art Deco architecture. Designed by the French architect Jean Desbois, it is notable for its great dome and X-shaped plan.
Work to repair and extend the existing building and organize external improvements began in 2008, and the renovation was completed in 2011.
Extensions to gaps in the existing building were low in height and restrained in design.
